High capacity metro trains project bringing new business to Morwell

By March 19, 2018Media Releases

MELBOURNE, VICTORIA – Morwell in the Latrobe Valley is home to a new facility and new jobs that will support Victoria’s High Capacity Metro Trains (HCMT) project with the assembly of traction and electrical auxiliary systems for the new fleet.

CRRC Times Electric Australia – a subsidiary of the largest rolling stock manufacturer in the world – and Downer will engage 25 new employees at its Morwell facility including positions for apprentices, trainees and workers facing barriers to employment.

“There are only a small number of companies worldwide with facilities capable of manufacturing hi-tech traction systems and CRRC Times Electric Australia is one of the best and they are now right here in Victoria.

“This contract will be supported by a Victorian supply chain helping us achieve our target of building the HCMT fleet with 60 per cent local content.” Phillip Walker, Evolution Rail CEO said.

“Workforce development and local investment in regional areas like Morwell will help revitalise the rail manufacturing industry and support the creation of job opportunities for Victorians.”

The traction system, that will be assembled at the Morwell facility, will convert the electrical energy into mechanical energy to propel the new trains using motors and gearboxes.

The new fleet will progressively enter service from mid-2019 on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines and will eventually run through the Metro Tunnel to Sunbury.

CRRC Times Electric Australia is a subsidiary of CRRC – a member of the Evolution Rail consortium that also includes Downer and Plenary, contracted by the Victorian Government to deliver 65 new High Capacity Metro Trains.

An information session for interested job seekers will be held in Morwell on Tuesday 20 March. For more information visit: careers.downergroup.com
